Our Story

Inspired By Wildlife was founded by Malcolm Snelgrove, a UK Horse and Conservation Photographer based in Dartmoor National Park. He is also a Patron for the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust, the organisation whose amazing work drove him to set up Inspired by Wildlife.

Connecting people with Dartmoor’s wildlife, landscape and heritage is Malcolm’s passion, a passion that shines through his images of Dartmoor ponies and their precious landscape. Malcolm and the DPHT have collaborated closely for the past five years to promote the charity's fantastic work, telling the story of the native Dartmoor pony to help secure the breed's long-term future on the moorland they love.

Right from the beginning Malcolm has funded Inspired By Wildlife himself; his time capturing images to build an image bank, strategizing, funding filming, producing and maintaining social media platforms, the website build, and all of the PR and Marketing. He aims to create even more conservation-related content to advocate on behalf of British wildlife, thus broadening his support for other fabulous UK charities.

To do all this, Inspired By Wildlife needs to ask for the public’s help to fund projects, and partner with the conservation photographers, videographers and marketing experts who share his enthusiasm for giving wildlife a voice.

Malcolm's stunning wildlife photography delivers an excellent way to engage greater public awareness. That's why he has launched the Inspired Collection, a selection of images and products for people to buy, in the knowledge that all the profits will go to support our partners' projects. When you own a piece of Malcolm's art, you know you've also helped to support vital conservation work.

A very personal story – Healed by Dartmoor

Malcolm's personal Dartmoor story involves healing as well as a way of life. An IT consultant with a love of photography, Malcolm kicked off his photography career as a respected lifestyle photographer, with commissions ranging from outdoor adventure specialists to popular clothing brands. Now an official Ambassador for Visit Dartmoor, his photography workshops attract delegates from all over the world.

A hole in the heart he had no clue about, and the resulting stroke he suffered at aged just 50 in 2017, inspired Malcolm to re-think everything. A stroke turns your life upside down in an instant. Thankfully Malcolm was one of the lucky ones and he recovered well. To help his recovery he spent hours quietly exploring Dartmoor in detail, healing gradually and re-learning how to take photographs.

These quiet, contemplative times delivered a magical experience. When Malcolm came across herds of native Dartmoor ponies living naturally on the moorland, far from the roads and car parks, he was fascinated, hooked, inspired... and the rest is history. Since then he has taken countless photographs of the ponies and their unique landscape, capturing unforgettable images that have inspired thousands of nature lovers.

All this passion and experience is brought to bear on Inspired By Wildlife.
